A
Daughter's Question
A simple, but heart-wrenching question posed
by Kari Vier’s seven-year-old daughter put Kari on a journey
to find out if her cancer would be passed on to her children.
After numerous tests, Kari discovered that she did not carry
the BRCA 1 or 2 genes, but found that her cancer was likely to
return. As a consequence, Kari underwent a double mastectomy.

to sign up for this year’s Komen Denver Race for the
Cure® on October 5th at Pepsi Center! |

You
Saved My Life!
Vicki
Fisbeck is like many Coloradans. For years, she and her husband
carried health insurance, but stopped because they couldn’t
afford it. For them, it became a matter of choosing between
food and utilities or health insurance. At the time, food was
a necessity; insurance was not. But when Vicki was diagnosed
with breast cancer their situation became a matter of life
or death. “We didn’t know where to turn,” says
Vicki. Fortunately, she was directed to Poudre Valley Health
Foundation (PVHF), a Denver Affiliate grantee, where she was
paired with a patient navigator who helped her obtain care
despite having no health insurance. The care was provided through
PVHF and a grant from the Komen Denver Affiliate.
